As it is the weakend, I do not have a unit in front of me to verify it.
Just looking over the code / manual and found a couple of anomalies.

Decimal 254 89 [brightness]
where [brightness] is a value between 0x00
and 0x03 (between 0 and 3) according to the table below:
Value Brightness
0x01 25% <---= ?
0x01 50%
0x02 75%
0x03 100%
If the remember function is on, this command acts the same as
VK204-25 ?

Please accept my apologoes for the mistake in the manual, we are getting it rectified as we speak. Here are the brightness levels on the VFD's:
0x00 - 100 %
0x01 - 75%
0x02 - 50%
0x03 - 25%
The factory default of 255 puts the display at 0x00 brightness value (100%)
Regarding auto scroll off, please have a look at PCN 2006-08-24-08 under Firmware Changes #2
