hello, I am creating a car mp3 plyaer... I want to know if I use a laptop, is there a way of getting a powersource for the 40x2 display out of the laptop? In other words, how?

Just use the serial cable for the communication and then make sure to get a Wide Voltage option on the LCD and then just steal 12V from the car somewhere. Since most of the car runs on 12V it will be very easy.

Okay, I also saw some way of powering the LCD with the serial port. Am I understanding this right? What do I have to do to make this work. If this is not going to work then do I just cut a floppy adapter from a desktop and run power from the cigarrett lighter to power the LCD?

tapped 5V out of a USB port should be v. easy, just rip a connector off something

I am not quite sure what you mean... What if the computer is a laptop and it doesn't have USB? Where can I get 5v from? What pin do I run the power to? How does that work?

Also, when I pull the power from the cigarette lighter, there are 2 lines, a positive and a negative. On the back of the LCD screen it takes a power connector with 4 wires. Where do I get the other two?

Thanks...

lol if the laptop doesn't have a USB port then you can't use a USb port  But even my old p133 lappie does, you sure yours doesn't?

The four power lines on the lcd are there only in spirit - so it's easy to interface with a floppy connector, on 5V lcds the 12v line isn't connected and two of the lines are earthed. I assume on the wide voltage the 5V line is missing. So you see there's only really two power connectors on the lcd

Cheers,

r.
