Please help a n00b out

Post by Smasher »

Hi.

I am building a PC and I have a case from Korea that has a Matrix Orbital LCD display. The case came with a CD that is missing half the files it needs to install.

I was able to install Frontview and LCD Smartie from the disc, but they dont' seem to work at all.
The closest thing to working is Frontview will light the display up when I hit 'Test' but other than that there is nothing.

I am not even sure what model the display is.
When I power on the PC I can faintly see **Matrix Orbital 9600 BPS Serial** on it, but the end of the cable terminates in USB -so I imagine it can't be the serial model.

Can anyone tell me exactly how to check the model?
Also, where can I get the drivercore for Vista?
The link in this forum reports "file not found".

Thanks for any help.

Hi Smasher,

Sounds like you've got yourself a mystery display. Unfortunately, I don't think I can tell you just what you've got with the info provided, but hopefully your display can let you know what it is.

It sounds like you've got an alphanumeric unit there, so normally you'd use uProject, but that doesn't play very nicely with USB, so I'll get you to try the MOGD# program for graphic units. Once you've got it downloaded, open it up, and try to autodetect that unit. If it's found, you'll get the name and firmware revision on the LCD screen.

If that doesn't work, you'll probably want to manually override the device, just to make sure it's communicating at the correct baud. To do that, you'll need the manual, which I can point you to once I have some idea of what we're dealing with here.

Any extra details you could provide would be great, especially the part number which should be on the back of the unit, probably written in white. Screen color and type are also handy, plus a description of that cable.

As for drivercore, that's for the GX series of graphic units only, for other USB devices you'll want to check out our the drivers on our support site. While you're at it, you may want to check out our commerce site as well to see if you can identify the unit from some of the images there.

Thanks,
~Troy

This is interesting, do you have more details regarding the display or the company?

I was just handed the case and asked to build the PC.
I don't know the company that made it -there is not a mark on it anywhere.

There is a manual that came with it that had a CD inside,
The manual is written half in English and half in Asian characters.

The CD contains an older version of Frontview and LCD Smartie but almost no information on what to do with them once they are installed.

I installed the MOGD Software.
It makes the display light up for a second, but then returns "No Display Connected".

The display itself has a small light green board on a lager dartk green board.
The small board is 4.5 X 1.5 inches.
The back of it has a white sticker that has the following ABC020002G05-DLW-R and underneath that is 050531 to the right of the sticker 0804 is printed directly on the board itself.

The large board is approximately 5.5 X 1.75 inches.
Printed on the board is VFD DISPALY REV A:0 (That is not a typo -it's "DISPALY")

I looked through the Commercial section but didn't see what I had in my hand. I was pretty thorough, but I admit that I did not browse every image.

Here are pictures of the display.

I can say 100% certain that this is NOT one of our displays and thus we cannot help you, but this does raise a number of other concerns, one of which being that there is someone in Asia using our name.

Give me a day or so to reach the person that gave me the case and I will find out. (They are out of town.)

The manual specifically says to select 'Matrix Orbital Displays" -there is no copyright information or anything on the manual.

And when the display goes black you can faintly read:
**Matrix Orbital**
!!9600 BPS Serial!!

I believe you when you say the device is not one of yours, but the whole situation is odd.
