I'm very tempted to buy a GLK12232-25-WBL-E and start toying with building a HUD for my car with it. My primary question is this: How will one of these units perform in direct sunlight? The extended-temperature version should be able to handle even Arizona summers (150 F), but will the screen fade from months of direct sun? Would I need to put some sort of cover on it when not in use? Alternatively, would there be a better (graphic) display for such harsh automotive use?
Side question: I'm guessing that blue text on white may not be the best color for a reflected HUD, but I'm not sure if any of the other M.O. similarly-sized options are any better. Comments and snide remarks are welcome.
I have not heard of an instance of an LCD fading after being in direct sunlight for a while, but we will try to find an answer for you.
As far as the best display for an HUD, I would recommed a VFD for the simple reason that it is a lot brighter, and with the grey filter it can handle the direct sunlight a lot better without washing out.
Actually if I can track down clare I'll get her thoughts on the matter as she has been talking with a race car designer who is currently using one of our displays for a similar task.
The only problem with a VFD (my first choice as well) is that I will need to write to the screen reversed text, so I'll need to be able to define at least one complete custom font. From what I've seen, I'll need a graphic LCD to have that capability.
