Maximum Serial Cable lenght ...

Post by SilmarilS »

I just build an external module with near 100ft +-5ft of good shielded cable
and at 19200bps there are no problem even with screen refresh of 25fps in LCDC...no artifact..

So for the ones who might wonder what is the maximum cable lenght then there is the answer.....

The 100ft of cable is needed for my MP3 Control Box....

More is better than Too Short....
My first external box has 25ft and it is too short of 2ft....
For the Cable, in the town I live there are some industrial electronics vendors.... they sell the cable by foot... I just made the power and data plugs at each end....
At home, I roll the cable on a spool to "hide" the mess it makes....

if you cable isn't thick or well insulated you may get garbage on the screen and loss of data. If this does happen slowing down the display helps.

If you drop your speed to 9600 baud you can communicate anywhere between 250-500 feet safely. Of course this would depend on the type of cable, thickness of the wires, etc.

That's right....

my cable is about 3/16" in diameter and with a very good Shielding...
a GND wire + a Foil Shield

So no problemo here...
And even when I pass an audio cable alongside the data cable, no corruption is heard on the audio...
My first external mod is not using the shield in the cable (only 25ft)(not connected) and when it come close to an audio cable you can heard the screen refresh....

The Mp3 Control is in the Gallery Section !

For me, it is very shitty compared to my other external box (also in the gallery)....
I was too exited to make it working with the keypad and the software so I neglected the Hardware part....Now that everything is working perfectly as supposed to, I will build a better housing for it....something at the height of Matrix-Orbital :)

Great products by the way.....
