VFD Display Life

Is the display MTBF affected by the brightness of the display? In other words, by settings the brightness at the lowest level during the nighttime, is it possible to extend the lifetime of the display unit?

Hello...

If you are displaying static text for a long period of time it would be beneficial to turn the brightness down as it will increase the length of display life. However if text is being constantly changed, then changing the brightness will have no effect in the long run. Please be warned that if static text is displayed over a surmountable period of time, burn-in may occur. We suggest to cycle the screen every 30 minutes or so.

just asking for a clarification here...is that above statement referring to having static stuff on the lcd w/ backlight off or just the more general with the backlight on? What I'm coding is a "screen blank" that after X seconds (on the order of 900) of my vehicle being stopped, the backlight turns off until I again engage in movement over a certain mph. (yep, there's gps and ham radio technology in use in this project...)

Would that be sufficient for a screen saver to avoid burn-in, or should I be looking to blank the screen also (a pain as a redraw isn't quite as easily done as it is said).

When we say "to cycle the screen every 30 minutes or so", the intent is so that the same area is not be utilized everytime. Even if you turn the display off and then on and don't change the "display area", then the deteriation of the specific area will be greater than anywher else!!! Does this make sense???

Wait...

are we talking VFD or LCD or both with the burn-in issue here?

The original question refered to VFD useage, a followup reply referenced the LCD system. Which is it?

I've got a VFD and would like to know, for example, if I'm displaying a movie title in the VFD while the film is playing - and its a 2+ hour film, should I shift the line that contains this fixed title every 30 minutes?

We are talking about the VFD and I would recommend every 30 minutes a rotation of the title...Please be advised by doing this you just prolong the life of your VFD and avoid burn-in!!
