MX222 And Vantec Silent Fans (Noisy)

Hi, First of, Congrats to MO for this excellent LCD which I've just got. Quick query ... I've connected up 3 Brand new 80mm Vantec Silent fans to Fan Hdrs 1,2&3 and they are quite noisy, worst of all is the fluctuating speed at which they rotate, its sounds like the voltage to them is fluctuating, causing them to pulse(rev).

This is with the fans running 50% I can overcome it by running at 85% but they're too noisy.

I'll pick up a couple 80mm and a 120mm today and try it out. Also, lets see what James has to say about this...

This is strange. I've tested out over twenty fans of many different manufacturers, sizes and speeds, and all of them were only slightly noiser with PWM mode on the fans. We'll have to pick up the fans and test them out for ourselves.

The one thing I can suggest in the meantime is try disabling the RPM checking on the fans. I only half expect that to have an effect, but it's worth trying out.

We'll keep you posted.

HI , thanks for you're responses. I've tried disabling the Report RPM, on all three and individually and its still the same.

The fan which is making this noise is running at 55%, with the other two at 45 and 80%.

I've just changed them all to 55% and the variation is still there ??

Well, I tried the 80mm and 120mm fans here, from 20 to 100%, the 80mm did begin to vibrate slightly at 55% or so but I didn't find it noisy. It was alittle louder but nothing major at all. I'm not sure what kind of problem you might be having....

" Henry thanks for your comments so far, I don’t want to seem overly pedantic and its extremely hard to describe, so I’ve attached an mp3 of the sound I just recorded, initially it starts with the three fans at 100% then drops to 50% for all of them at around the 30 second park you should be able to hear one of the fans slightly pulsing and it becomes more evident from 45Sec…Don’t worry the sound file only lasts 50sec (I think J)

I’ll need to strip the system down to find out,

is it the MX222 not supply a stable voltage ?
are the fans absolute rubbish ?
Or is it some form of vibration from the Coolermaster 110 Case.

I have just tried the fan with a spare power supply and a zalman fanmate to simulate speed reduction and see if this emulates the current prob – No, the fan ran steady at min and max speed setting with the zalman fanmate. So it does not appear to be the fan or the case causing the fluctacting speed variation.


Any thoughts would be appreciated.

THe soudn file sounds fine to me. The MX2 provides voltage by PWM, so the 12V pulses making the fan go slower or faster. I think it might a combination of the fans and case. The CM case you have is probably aluminum, and from my exprience with the Lian Li, they tend to vibrate easier because the material is lighter.. I would recomend some rubber washers between the fan and case. That might help. Probably the fans are not helping too much either.
