Here is a picture of the back of the facia with the ribbon cable.

If you look closely at the ribbon cable you can see that the first lead isn't even used, hence no cable soldered on.

Here are the connections to the actual VFD. The way the 5-way button was set-up was that it had 6 leads, with one being common. When a button was pressed, it would connect the circuit with the common lead. The cable all the way on the right (pin6) is the common one. So, the way it's set up, the VFD outputs the letters A-E when a button is pressed.
