I don't think it was hard to test it using the MO program, I can't remember what it's called, but it's the most recent one.

Wow - this is what I want to do on mine.... How would I go about getting blue/white characters on a black background? I want the VFD look but already own an LCD! Where I can I buy the polarising film? what colour do I need to get?

Have you tried the MO diagnostic program? I've got the same module, and I was having trouble with lcdproc until I figured out that the thing was responding with FF to the 'identify yourself' command instead of the correct value. I hacked lcdproc to handle this - maybe you have the same problem ...
