try removing the com port in the device manager and restarting,, i had that problem this morning with my lcd and that fixed it

the white connector is for power correct, but the R numbered pins are mainly for keypad. there should be GND, Tx, and Rx, pins on your LCD, those are the serial pins,, GND likewise goes to pin 5 for serial ground, and the other 2 are transmit ans receive, weather they need to be connected up to pin ...

Don't know if that will be possible, but we have started looking into getting some one to write a Linux program for us. Well only other thing i can think of is make sure the Com port is set to 8, none, and 1, and try turning flow control off. or set to None, depending on your version of windows.
