Prior to ordering one, i was wondering if it was possible to remove the serial plug on the LCD to relocate it to another position? (was thinking of how to mount it in my keyboard)

You can remove the DB-9 connector and use the 3 of the 4 holes right under it for the serial cable. Use a volt meter to figure out which pin is what, cut the BD-9 connector off and write up a new serial cable... Rx, Tx and GND....

And be care full...

I was thinking I'd buy one, remove the thing being careful to mark where each went and then just solder in extensions so i could mount it perpendicular to the PCB... having it stick out the back would make it difficult to mount it in my intended location
