Something like
this might work, (and a couple more show up when searching for usb or serial over ethernet on google) but we have never tested such a setup so we cannot guarantee it will actually work.

Yes I saw those but was wondering if this has been tried...evidently not. My concern is powering the lcd from the usb hub.... What is the minimum power needed for the lcd module and what do you recommend as a model number to use in this application.

A 2x20 LCD will use somewhere between 120-180mA and a 4x20 might use up to 250mA... so all within USB power specifications.

will I have to regulate the power or will thet work on a range of voltages. I am thinking I will power these throught the blue pair of the ethernet and there may be some voltage drop at 5 v. at a distance so I thought 12v and accept the vo;tage drop at the server end or regu;kate it there.
