Okay, I also saw some way of powering the LCD with the serial port. Am I understanding this right? What do I have to do to make this work. If this is not going to work then do I just cut a floppy adapter from a desktop and run power from the cigarrett lighter to power the LCD?

The LCD will not power off the serial port. But if you apply power to pin #9 you will be able to supply power to the LCD through it. All you will have to do is take pin #9 wire and make cut it off so it doesn't go into the serial port and apply power there.
