LCD2041 (1.5) Problems with Serial connection/PC interface

Hello everyone, I'm new here and have recently ordered a MO LCD-2041 (rev 1.5) for use on a design project at school (UW Madison for those interested). We are having problems displaying anything on the LCD module and any help you guys have would greatly be appreciated:
I have checked and double checked the COM settings in device manager to ensure that the correct bit rate, data bits, parity and stop bits are set correctly. I don't know what to set flow control at since theres no mention of this in the data sheet (but I've tried all three options in Win XP SP2). I have also tried multiple serial cables to be sure that I was using a straight through and not a null cable (again specified in the .pdf). I do not know how to tell the difference between a null and straight through cable. I have also tried the LCD on a different computer (again Win XP SP2).
We are very frustrated that this isn't working as we purchased a MO display because of their reputation as an LCD that is easy to connect to a PC.
TIA for any/all help.
