LX204-24-USB GPO problems

I recently purchased an LX204-24-USB. The GPO headers for the fans are outputting 5v. Nothing I do changes this output voltage.
If I switch the jumper that's intended for 12v operation, the unit locks up and begins to overheat (yes, overheat!) .
Why can I not get 12v out of this unit? I need to control fans, but the fans won't even spin up at 5v it seems.
In addition to this, there really needs to be a walkthrough on how to setup fans. I searched the forums but was unable to find anything (Maybe it's there and I'm not searching on the right keywords?) - and there's nothing in the manual, which brings me to another gripe I have... For the price of the these units, I expect at least some reasonable software to be bundled with it... instead you get a demo version of software you have to pay for. What kind of cheesy action is that?
All in all, I expected a lot more out of Matrix Orbital, but so far, the unit is basically worthless. Won't control fans, and needs $20 more in software to even be of any real use.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated on why this thing only outputs 5v and refuses to output 12v.
