Is there a way to ask the LCD to return the startup screen string or to force it to display the startup screen by software?

by my knowledge: no, there is no way to force the startup screen or get the startup screen.

On my 12232-25 graphical the startup pic is the first in memory, so making it display it at whim is easy peasy - doubt it's the same for your display though

With alphanumeric LCDs, NO... Graphic YES...
