VFD brightness data byte range

Could someone please confirm the format of the value for the set brightness (FF 59) command for VFDs? I am trying to fix the Girder plug-in.
I think the VK-202-25 and VK-204-25 have 0-3, increasing from 0=25% to 3=100%.
I suspect that the VK-202-24-USB and VK-204-24-USB have 0-FF, increasing brightness.
However, the manuals are contradictory.
The 202-25 says in sections 6.1.2 and the table in 7.7 that it is 0-3 increasing.
The 204-25 says in sections 6.1.2 and the table in 7-7 that it is 0-3 decreasing.
The 202-24 says in section 7.1.2 that it is 0-3 increasing. In the table in 8.8 it says 0-3 with no indication of direction.
The 204-24 says in section 7.1.2 that it is 0-3 increasing. In the table in 8.8 it says 0-FF increasing.
I only actually know that the 202-25 is right, because I have one. No one ever said that the 204-25 didn't work and it assumes the same codes. Someone has said that the 204-24 doesn't work, so I conclude that it has different codes.
