Rx/Tx LED freezes LCD display

Hi there,
I purchased the Matrix Orbital MX2 (222) USB Aluminium LCD a few days ago, after reading the manual i see you can attatch various LED's.
I have been trying to get the Rx/Tx status to work with a couple of 5v Green LED's, one flashes and one does nothing which form what i read on this board is correct... however, when i connect up to the status which flashes, the LCD gets stuck and wont flip to the next screen or even update. As soon as i remove the LED it resumes as normal.
Help please?
