Fans at wit's end

Post by gunsmoke »

Hi all,
I am at my wits end. Purchased 3 cooler master 80mm case fans for my matrix orbital mx 222 v1.4. After connecting 2 fans and running my machine, i noticed, aside from the fact that the fans dont start until the computer is booted, that i CANNOT get an rpm value from GPO 2 or 3. I can get an rpm reading off every fan i connect to GPO 1. And yes, i have checked, many, many times that the LCDC software has RPM reporting enabled for GPO 1 - 3.
Aside from tearing my hair out, i have no idea how to solve the problem.
Any ideas? is my MX222 faulty? is it the software?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Gunsmoke

Hey gunsmoke -

Can't help you with your problem yet, I'm still a bit of a newbie. Though I do have a question for you - What path did you go down to figure out how to get the display to control the fans and stuff? I eventually would like it to be able to adjust the fan speed based on temperature, are you doing something similar? Where did you look to find the information?

Thanks! And Good luck!

Check out this thread here. It'll tell you how to get the fans running when power is on but the computer hasn't finished booting yet. Basically, there's a little bit of soldering and some code input involved. Can't help you with the RPM thing, though. Good luck.

Try this program here for testing the Fan Headers

Fan headers tested, still no better off!

:(
Tried the GPO PWM / RPM test program.
With a fan attatched to GPO's 2 or 3, no RPM values are reported at all.
Only GPO 1 correctly reports RPM, though all 3 fan speeds can be adjusted using the software.
Another thing i have noticed about the display is that when i have fans connected to the MX in GPO 2 or 3, it seems to slow / corrupt some of my screens.... or perhaps i am dreaming.....

So, the million dollar question, is my MX222 faulty?

P.s.
Andy,
Running your fans should be a simple process. If you have an MX2xx like me, all you have to do is connect a floppy power cable to the back of the unit - and check the jumper on the back is set to high power (it ships this way). Simply connect your fans and / or temperature probes correctly to the supplied headers (your fans must be a 3 pin type to recieve rpm readings!). And you are ready to go. There is lots of help in the LCDC forums (www.lcdc.cc) and you can do lots of cool stuff with the lcdc software. I will post more details on how to make the related screens there!. Good luck!

If you are using the Advanced GPOs to control fans, then disable RPM sensing or you will have problems. Check out this thread: http://www.lcdforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1579
