-25PC gpo connect to a fan with Rheostat

Post by vdubpsu »

is it possible to hook a Rheostat from the 12v gpo's to a fan. i know these gpo's are great for fans, but i want to run the fan at a lower voltage using a rheostat. Will i encounter any problems?

Pay attention to current drain. If there are problems, that's where they will come from.

Take your fan/rheo rig, hook it up to your PSU directly and use a meter to follow the current draw as you sweep the reheo across the range (consider using a fixed resistor and a rheo of about equal value in series so that the full rheo sweep covers the useful voltage range of the fan). If you are pulling more than 750 mA, that's trouble. I know Henry has beat on the GPOs harder than that before, but they are rated 750 mA, and you should be able to go up to that with confidence.
