MY LCD2041 isn't working HELP!

Post by Bevwan »

Well my lcd display arived in the post last week, I've finnaly had time to sit down and play with it and it's not working! I've done the 5 volt cable mod. The backlight comes on when the system powers up the first block flashes, but when i try to send any data to the display i get aload of jiberish! I've tried using many applications to send data all resulting in different types of funny characters... Using the matrixdemo i tried to send text to the display and it get the pie sign no matter what i type. I'd really like this to be a simple problem as living in the UK sending it back would suck! If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

Reply of the Great Henry Himselft:

Check the baud rate you are sending at. If you don't know it, better poweroff the display, manual override it by connecting the 2 middle pins on the keypad-header, power on the display. Now the baudrate should be 19200. After that, set the baudrate to any value you want (if you want to keep it, still set the baudrate to 19200) and then disconnect the 2 middle pins from each other.

edit: and be sure to use a straight cable, not a cross-over cable
...whatever, as if I care...

Cheers for the response, i have been searching the forum for ages, I can see that a manual override would be a good starting point except i cant find info on doing it to my lcd, the 2041 doesnt have keyboard jummpers. there are 3 pin holes where i believe the keyboad things should be but i don't know which ones to connect, I dont want to short the whole thing when i power it on.... Has any one done a manual override on a 2041? Oh i think i have all the correct baud settings..

Can you try the display on a different computer?

If you're using the correct cable and it's not the baud rate it could be your serial port...

Hi there,

http://www.matrixorbital.com/manuals/lcd2041/index.htm

Section 2.2.3 - if you short the middle two jumpers you gaurentee the display expects a 19200 baud, so that's a good start. But I assume you've got that already, that's what's meant by the manual override of the comm speed.

What cable are you using now? You need straight pin to pin connections from pin 2 to 2, 3 to 3 and 5 to 5 from the LCD to your RS232c port... have you got these? If you buy a serial cable from a shop they'll likely sell you a null modem cable which crosses over pins 2 and 3 - which is very wrong :)

Ok let me know, cheers,

Rob.

Hi rob, well i bought the cable from mo! The other cable I tried didn't work but that is explained by what you just said! I have had the jumpers set like that from the start and have tried changing them but to no avail :( I think i might hav to send it back to mo... not really my idea of fun. shipping is a stitch, do you think i'll have to pay for import tax if they send me another one?

Hmm well it doesn't sound good, if you bought the serial cable from mo then that isn;t the problem (unless it's damaged). So it's not your serial port, it's not the comm speed and it's not software related... sounds as if the controller might be damaged, but it's strange that it should start up fine with the flashing cursor.

Talk to MO technical support and see what they say (see the rules thread for an email address), but it does sound like RMA time. I doubt you'll have to pay customs a second time, if they send out a replacement then it's not something which has been bought, so I guess you should be ok - I've never tried it though.

Ok hope it's something simple, you're not shorting any of the LCD's controller on anything are you?
