Smoked my new MX212

Post by FrankFuss »

Well I smoked the same chip that is pictured in this following post:

http://www.lcdforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2977

I have a new MX212 (LK202-24-USB Rev 1.6) and had been running it with four temp probs and internal USB and floppy power cables. Everything was working just fine until I hooked up a couple case fans, and smoked the chip. I suspect one of the case fans (Scythe SFF21F 120MM 0.20A) because it no longer worked after the incident. The fan was new and I tested it before hooking it up to the display, but how could the display have killed the fan?

I have another display on the way and I do want to use the same type of fan that I had the problem with. I just want to ask if there is something I should watch out for or avoid when I try the same thing for the second time? Thanks.

Hi Frank,

Thank you for posting on the forum.

Sorry to hear that your MX212 smoked. The reason for smoking the controller (or any component) is usually a short on power and ground, or it could be too much voltage. In the case of your fan, make sure that it is hooked up correctly and that it does not impose voltage on the module. Also check that the casing does not touch any power connections.

Hi Raquel,

I did not see any problems with my setup. The only explaination is that the fan must of shorted out. It was a new fan and I had tested in on a spare power supply, but stranger things have probably happened. I have the new display installed and will have all new fans later this week. I will test the fans and hook them up one at a time, and we will see what happenes.
