Got it working, now I just need to decide whether to mount the keypad permanently (with backing) or to keep using sticky tape. I haven't decided if my wooden mounting will be my final design.

I have a small problem with the 4x4 keypad. I'm assuming that the white dot on the 8pin connector is pin 1, so it is connected the corresponding position on the LCD. But I am only able to use 12 of the 16 buttons. Here's how that lays out currently:
N x D I <- as you can see the "x"
M x C H buttons ...
