I have empirically confirmed what you said, I was just making sure I wasn't doing something wrong. The documentation is a bit hard to understand sometimes.

Also it says in 8.3 and 8.4 Set Brightness and Set and Save Brightness that the defaults are 255 and on my display it seems the brightness is 128. Is that correct?

Read Customer Data command is 254 / 53. Immediately after receiving this command, the display should start transmitting 16 bytes. If these 16 byte - customer data are not set, they will read as 0xFF's.

Sorry about the documentation, I confirmed that it is incorrect. There should be no need for the first confirmation byte (the one before the font width is sent by the host); as laid out in the table on page 44 of the manual .
