Want to take a look at my Incomplete HTPC ?
Here it is, at the moment all it does is play Mp3's off the network, sort of a "beta" eventually it will do DVD and the works, but wanted to see what the paint would look like and experiment with controls, so here it is:

Hand crafted case made entirely from machined aluminum.
Low profile, compact size (5.25"H x 17.50"W x 11.00"D) allows case to fit into consumer sized audio cabinets.
Small machined window for mounting a 4x20 VFD display by Matrix Orbital.
Hinged cover allows easy access to inside of case.

Color Cases Goth with AVSForum Retrofit
Difficulty:
Case mod pretty easy, getting serial to the display was tougher because serial ports are built in to motherboard. Required connecting a serial extender outside, cutting it off, feeding it into case, then constructing a connector inside the case.
Other system specs:
ASUS A7V333, AMD Athlon XP 1700+, HiPix HDTV card, 3 160 gig Maxtor drives, 2 combined into 320gb RAID 0, Delta 410 sound card, Radeon 7000, Theater Tek, Media Jukebox, Girder

This shows how LCD integrates into the AVSForum retrofit case. Original case was a Goth from Color Cases. I added the retrofit front put together by Serge Breton. If anyone's interested in assembly detail pix, or one showing how this unit looks in context of the whole setup, let me know.
By the way, the power button on this retrofit has an LED in the middle which was designed for use as a power-on indicator. Since the LCD lights up when the power comes on, I modified the switch so that the LED indicates IDE activity instead.

Antec retrofit by Power from the AVSForums
Difficulty:
Pretty simple except for soldering some tiny wires for a custom joystick to interface with the VFD/LCDC.

The joystick was salvaged from an old Sony dvd player and the retrofit facia was then machined for the switch.

Difficulty: Easy (my part). Serge Breton from AVSForum did the hard part. I just had to mount the LCD display and attach the new front to the case. There was a little cutting involved for mounting the DVD drive and for the power switch.
Other system specs: Cheapest P4 mainborad I could find for PC133 (512MB) memory. P4 1.8Mhz. Phillips Dynamic Edge 4.1 sound card. ATI Radeon 7500 video card. LG DVD drive. Windows XP Pro. ZoomPlayer with Sonic Cinemaster Filter for Video and Cyberlink filter for audio. Winamp3.

My objective when starting this HTPC project was to integrate as many audio/video components as possible into a small case that actually looks like a consumer A/V component and has most functions controlled by a single remote controller.
The MX2 HTPC will function as a HDTV receiver/tuner, HDTV PVR (record to hard drive and D-VHS tape recorder), audio preamp, satellite radio receiver, DVD player, CD player, and APE file player.
Unit: MX212 (the new MX2 USB version w/baybus and 4 temp inputs)
Software: LCDC (came with MX2)
The bundled LCDC software comes complete with most (if not all) currently available 2x20 screens and was very easy to install and with a few (very few) edits my MX2 HTPC was fully operations.
Case: Cooler Master ATC-613B ATX Case with 350W PS
The Cooler Master ATC-613B is a custom manufactured HTPC Low Profile Case that uses a 350W propriety power supply. This ultra-light all aluminum black case features drop down doors that hide two 5.25" bays, one 3.5" bay and Front USB/Firewire connectors.
Difficulty: Easy (for the MX2) and fairly easy for the other modifications (with Dremel tool and metal nibbler.
The MX212 comes with a USB cable connected to the back to which I added an internal USB connector (included with ATC-613B Case). The MX212 is the latest design from MO and has 4 WOL (Wake On LAN) connectors for DS18S20 digital temp sensors (not included) and 3 cooling fan connectors that can control the fan speed based on several options in the LCDC control software. For example a target temperature can be set for the CPU or any other temp sensor and the controller will increase or decrease fan speed to maintain that temp. In addition to the CPU cooling fan, the 613B case has a loud (4500RPM) 60mm rear exhaust fan that I connected to the MX2 Baybus and set the target CPU temperature (from MBM5) at 45 degrees C. The baybus fan controller keeps the CPU temp at 45 degrees with the rear fan speed reduced to as low as 30%. Under heavy load like decoding High Definition TV video the fan will be increased to 90
