Hot Buttons

Forgive me as am a newbie to this whole LCD thing. But after gathering some information and possiblities of this display on how they interact with both hardware and software, is it possible to set "hot buttons" to control the actuall unit such as suspend or shutdown? When I refer to "hot buttons" I am thinking of creating or even using existing key pads for this operation. Please leave your suggestions or knowledge in what is possible from system functions (anything that launches a program with in the system, maybe for another screen).

It will not directly control the LCD, but a keypad can send commands to software, which can, in turn, control the LCD to turn the backlight on/off, clear the display, show information, etc.
