Label update speed

Post by RonS » Sun Nov 02, 2014 1:20 pm

Hi,

this week I have received one of your GTT70A units and I have started to make some tests with it.
I have noticed that the update speed of the defined labels is rather slow, when any other TTF font than the internal Font "0" is used.
Compared to all the other graphic functions, which are almost instantaneous, the label updates are much slower.
For example, updating 32 labels in one go (which I need to do in my application) takes several seconds to finish.
When using the internal Font "0" the label update speed is as quick as expected, but unfortunately this font is too small and I have not managed to change the size of it.
I have installed the latest firmware 2.2 in the device.

Do you think the label updates can be made faster in future firmware versions?

Thanks
Ronny

Hi Ronny,

I appreciate your feedback regarding the GTT70A, and believe I have been able to replicate your test conditions. Using a 6pt arial font, it takes approximately 4 seconds to visually update 32 labels displaying the extended date and time. However, using the default font, updates require less than 1 second.

The default font at ID 0 is something called proggy. It is only one size, and responds to rotation a little differently than a standard true type font, but it's built into the unit to ensure there is always a font available for displaying text.

We did make a few changes to increase label speed at firmware revision 2.2. You should find that using a solid background colour and setting the font rendering style to monochrome will increase label drawing speed.

We're currently testing some additional changes for labels with the goal of improving speed for the next firmware release.

Thanks,
Troy

Hello Troy,

it's been a while since I've posted my question and I wanted to ask if we are close to a firmware release which fixes this problem.
I'm about to finish my prototype project, but the way larger fonts (16pt) are rendered now is holding me back to give the unit to my customers for testing.

Thanks
Ronny

Hello Ronny,

We have recently released an update for the firmware on the GTT's.
I am not sure though if it does have the changes for the label speed, but please give it a try.
Please check this page out.

Thank you,
Raquel

Hi Raquel,

thanks for your answer.
I have updated now to R2.3.0.6632 as recommended, but the label update speed is still very slow when using larger fonts (16pt).

Hi Ronny,

I am glad to inform you that we are currently looking into this and made some changes that showed gained speed on rendering labels.
We are still in the testing phase though. I will inform you as soon as we have something ready.

Thank you,
Raquel
