I found a LK162-12 on sale and thought I would put one into my PC.

The problem is it does not understand normal control characters like CR or LF, it has this braindead protocol with 0xFE escape.

Why make a display with ASCII charset that does not understand ASCII control characters?

It could JustWork if attached to a serial port and console directed to it but not this way.

Cause it wasn't designed with that purpose, using the 'braindead' 0xfe protocol will give you more control over the display then plain ascii ever could, thats why.

The 0xFE advanced command prefix aside, newer LCDs have been programmed to retain the intelligence of control characters CR (0x0D), LF (0x0A), FF (0x0C) and BS (0x08).
