I'm not sure what you guys have talked about, but it sure sounds to me like this unit should work. 2 important tests: 1 - Can you see key presses? 2 - Can you store contrast (or something) through power cycles? Sure, you can add buttons to the LK404-55 (55 of them if you want). As for the LEDs, I think that unit has just 1 (or none) outputs for that, so the VU is out.
